Hojicha Tea – Roasted Green Tea from Japan

Hojicha tea, also written as Houjicha, is a Japanese green tea with a warm, roasted character. Unlike many classic green teas, it is roasted after processing. This creates a mild flavour with gentle roasted notes, a subtle natural sweetness and delicate hints of caramel and cocoa.

This roasted green tea comes from Kagoshima in southern Japan. The Yabukita cultivar, one of the most widely grown tea varieties in Japan, is used for this Hojicha tea. The leaves and stems are carefully roasted, giving the tea its amber-coloured infusion and smooth, rounded flavour.

Hojicha Tea with Warm Roasted Notes

Hojicha tea has a smooth, balanced and pleasantly roasted taste. Compared with fresh, grassy green teas, it is warmer and less astringent. It is therefore a good choice for anyone who enjoys Japanese green tea but prefers a milder and more rounded cup.

Houjicha from Kagoshima

Kagoshima is located in southern Japan and is one of the country’s well-known tea-growing regions. Many green teas from this area have a clear and aromatic character. With Houjicha, however, the focus is not on fresh grassy notes but on its distinctive roasted aroma.

The Japanese word «houji» broadly refers to roasting, while «cha» means tea. This roasting process gives Hojicha tea its characteristic profile. It changes the colour, aroma and flavour of the tea, creating a style that is clearly different from Sencha and other Japanese green teas.

How to Prepare Hojicha Tea

Prepare Hojicha tea with hot water that is not fully boiling. A short steeping time is enough for the warm roasted notes and mild flavour to develop. You can adjust the steeping time slightly according to your taste.

Hojicha tea can be infused several times. Its flavour changes slightly with each infusion. The first cup is usually the most aromatic, while later infusions become softer and more delicate.

Enjoying and Combining Hojicha Tea

Its smooth roasted character makes this tea a pleasant companion for small sweet treats or a mild alternative to stronger green teas. Its flavour remains soft, nutty and pleasantly roasted.

If you would like to use Hojicha not only as a traditional loose-leaf tea but also for lattes, desserts or recipes, our Hojicha powder is a suitable choice. It is finely ground and brings the roasted green tea flavour directly into drinks and creative recipes.

If you enjoy Japanese green teas but would like to discover a different flavour profile, our Japan Genmaicha green tea is also worth exploring. It combines green tea with roasted rice, creating warm and slightly nutty notes.

Hojicha, Houjicha or Hōjicha?

There are several spellings for this Japanese tea. The form Hōjicha indicates the long pronunciation of the Japanese vowel. Hojicha and Houjicha are both commonly used in English. They refer to the same roasted green tea from Japan.

Storage

To preserve its roasted aroma, store Hojicha tea in a dry, cool place in a tightly sealed container. Avoid direct sunlight, moisture and strong surrounding odours, as tea can absorb other aromas easily. Proper storage helps maintain its clear, mild and aromatic flavour.
