Warming spice blends for tea, milk and chai latte

Chai Tea is all about warm spices, rich aroma and flexible preparation. Some blends include black tea, while others are pure spice mixes that you can combine with tea, milk, rooibos or plant-based drinks.

Typical ingredients include cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, anise and pepper. Depending on the recipe, the taste can be strong, spicy, slightly sweet, creamy or pleasantly hot.

Tea blend or pure spice mix?

A classic Chai Tea often combines black tea with spices. It works well with hot water, milk or a plant-based alternative and is also suitable for a traditional Masala Chai preparation.

A pure spice blend gives you more freedom. You can add it to black tea, rooibos, milk, oat drink or desserts, depending on how you like your cup.

Find your style of chai

With black tea: classic, bold and good with milk.
Pure spice blends: without black tea and easy to combine.
Rooibos blends: mild, round and naturally caffeine-free.
Ayurveda-inspired blends: with spices, herbs or mate.
Latte style: smooth, spicy and ideal with milk or oat drink.

Preparation ideas

Preparation depends on the blend. A tea blend can be infused with hot water or simmered gently with milk. A pure spice mix can be boiled with milk or plant drink, added to black tea or used as a seasoning for warm drinks.

For a more classic cup, simmer the spices with water and milk, then sweeten to taste. If the blend contains black tea, follow the recommended steeping time so the flavour stays balanced.

More than a cup of tea

Pure spice mixes are also useful beyond the teacup. You can use them in chai latte, porridge, pastries, desserts or warm milk drinks when you want a gentle spiced note.
