Description
Cardamom pods for tea and cooking
Cardamom pods are an aromatic spice with a warm, spicy and slightly fruity scent. The green pods contain small seeds with an especially intense taste. Therefore, they are suitable for sweet and savoury dishes, as well as chai, coffee, spice blends and tea infusions.
In many kitchens, cardamom is used sparingly because its aroma is clearly noticeable. The pods pair well with baked goods, rice pudding, desserts, curries, rice dishes, soups and sauces. In addition, they harmonise beautifully with cinnamon, cloves, ginger, pepper and vanilla.
Cardamom pods with a warm aroma
The taste of cardamom is spicy, slightly sweet, fresh and gently sharp. The aroma becomes especially expressive when you lightly crush the pods or grind the seeds just before use. This allows the fragrant notes to unfold more clearly and spread more evenly through the dish.

Using cardamom in the kitchen
Cardamom is versatile and works in both sweet and savoury recipes. In baked goods, it adds a warm and slightly oriental note. It is especially suitable for biscuits, spiced pastries, cakes, sweet breads and festive baking.
Cardamom also adds depth and fragrance to savoury dishes. It complements curries, rice dishes, lentils, vegetables, marinades and mild sauces. If you cook the pods whole, you can remove them before serving. If you grind the seeds, the aroma becomes stronger and spreads more directly.
Cardamom for chai, coffee and milk drinks
Cardamom is a classic ingredient in chai and many spiced drinks. Together with black tea, milk, cinnamon, cloves and ginger, it creates a warm and aromatic flavour. Coffee can also be refined with lightly crushed cardamom pods.
For milk drinks, gently press the pods and let them steep in warm milk. Afterwards, strain the drink. This gives the milk a fine spicy note without making the aroma too strong.
Preparing cardamom tea
For cardamom tea, lightly crush the pods so the seeds can release their aroma better. Then pour hot water over them and let the infusion steep for several minutes. The tea tastes warm, spicy and slightly fresh.
You can prepare cardamom tea on its own or combine it with other spices. Cinnamon, ginger, cloves or a little black tea are especially suitable. If you prefer a milder taste, use fewer pods or shorten the steeping time slightly.
Using cardamom whole or ground
Whole cardamom pods are ideal for dishes and drinks that steep or simmer for longer. This allows them to release their aroma slowly. For spice blends, doughs or marinades, you can remove the seeds from the pods and grind them fresh.
Freshly ground cardamom tastes more intense than ready-ground powder. Therefore, it is worth opening the pods shortly before use. This keeps the aroma fresh for longer and gives you better control over the intensity.
Storage
To preserve scent and taste, store cardamom pods in a dry, cool and well-sealed place. Avoid direct sunlight, moisture and strong surrounding odours because spices can easily absorb smells. This keeps the pods aromatic and versatile for longer.
