Tea from the Azores by Chá Gorreana

A Tea Plantation in the Middle of the Atlantic

Located around 1,500 km off the European mainland, the Azores are home to Chá Gorreana, Europe’s oldest tea plantation. Since 1883, tea has been cultivated here without pesticides, surrounded by rolling green hills and the mild Atlantic climate.

We visited the plantation ourselves and experienced first-hand the care and dedication that goes into every cup of tea.

Chá Gorreana Tea Plantation

A Place Full of History – Open to Everyone

From the moment you arrive, the plantation’s long history is unmistakable. Visitors are welcome to walk through the tea fields, discover the historic machinery and learn how the tea is processed from leaf to finished product.

Traditional Processing with Skilled Handcraft

After harvesting, the tea leaves are processed using traditional methods. Many of the historic machines have been in operation for generations.

One of the most impressive aspects is the careful handwork. Every leaf is inspected before being packed, helping to preserve the exceptional quality of the tea.

The Chá Gorreana Plantation

The Chá Gorreana tea plantation is nestled among rolling hills overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The mild climate allows the tea plants to grow slowly, giving the teas their fresh, clean and subtly mineral character.

Why Tea from the Azores Is So Special

Tea from the Azores is one of the few teas grown in Europe. The mild Atlantic climate, high humidity and mineral-rich volcanic soils create unique growing conditions on São Miguel.

At Chá Gorreana, green and black teas have been produced using traditional methods for generations. Small-scale production, skilled craftsmanship and decades of experience give these teas their distinctive character.
