Fennel Seeds for Fennel Tea and Herbal Blends

Fennel seeds have a mild, gently spicy flavour with a slightly sweet aniseed note. They are particularly suitable for fennel tea and can also be combined with other herbs and spices to create your own loose tea blends.

The characteristic aroma comes from the natural aromatic oils contained in the seeds. Lightly crushing or coarsely grinding them before brewing helps release more of their flavour into the infusion.

Preparing fennel seeds as tea

For fennel tea, lightly crush the seeds before pouring boiling water over them. Cover the cup or teapot while the tea is steeping so that the delicate aromas remain in the infusion.

On their own, the seeds create a clear herbal tea with a mild spice and a gentle sweetness reminiscent of aniseed. You can adjust the amount and steeping time according to the intensity you prefer.

Combining fennel tea with other ingredients

Fennel pairs well with other traditional herbs and spices. Anise and caraway are classic combinations and create a rounded blend with mild, spicy and slightly sweet flavours.

Chamomile, lemon balm or a small amount of ginger also work well. Depending on your choice, the finished tea can taste softer, fresher or more intensely spiced.

Fennel seeds in homemade tea blends

The seeds can be used as a single ingredient or as part of a personalised herbal blend. Their flavour is easy to recognise, so a relatively small amount is often enough to give a mixture more depth.

For bolder blends, fennel combines well with cinnamon, cardamom or ginger. In gentler herbal teas, it can be mixed with flowers or mild herbs without dominating the other ingredients.

Using fennel seeds in cooking

Besides tea, fennel seeds can also be used in cooking. Their sweet and spicy aroma works well in bread, soups, stews, sauces and Mediterranean or Asian-inspired dishes.

Lightly crushing the seeds before use helps distribute their flavour more evenly. As the aroma is distinctive, it is best to start with a smaller amount and add more according to taste.
